DETECTIVES in Nyanga have arrested three suspects and recovered stolen property worth thousands of dollars from two house-breaking gangs believed to be behind a spate of robberies that hogged the resort town in recent weeks.

One of the suspects was last Tuesday slapped with a 12-month jail term after pleading guilty to two counts of unlawful entry, while the other two suspects who belong to another gang denied ever taking part in burglary cases they are facing.

They have since been remanded in custody awaiting trial.

Nyanga provincial magistrate, Mr Ignatio Mhene presided over the cases, while Mr Kelvin Mufute prosecuted.

Hignore Zvikomborero Maereka (18) of Bhande Village in Nyanga pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful entry in aggravated circumstances.

He pounced on Christopher Sinduza’s house on two different occasions.

Mr Mufute told the court that the first count was committed on June 13.

“At around 6am, the complainant left his house and went to Rusape leaving everything intact. The doors and windows were locked. On the same day at around 10pm, he came back and entered his house only to discover that his radio which was hanging on the walls was missing. He went on to check around the house and discovered that the suspect had gained entry into the house through the kitchen window which was broken.

“He also noticed that the suspect took soap, a solar panel, engine oil and two small knives. The value of the stolen property was $75,” he said.

He pounced on Sinduza’s house again on June 16.

“On June 16 at around midnight, the accused entered the complainant’s house by opening the kitchen window from outside. While inside, he proceeded to the complainant’s bedroom where he was sleeping and demanded cash. The suspect was covering his face with a balaclava and holding an okapi knife in his right hand.

“The complainant surrendered $1 and a cellphone. The value of the stolen property was $18. It was recovered,” said Mr Mufute.

Amidu Mukwamba (40) of Ndorikanda Village in Mutasa and Peter Chivasa (35), who resides at Number 8525, Natview Park in Mutare, also appeared in court facing allegations of breaking into an Internet shop and looted laptops and various other wares in Honde Valley.

Mr Mufute said the suspects who are denying the charges pounced on e-World Internet Shop at Hauna Business Centre.

“The complainant is Wilson Madzitire who is a general dealer. The two accused persons connived and approached the complainant’s shop during the night. They were armed with a bolt cutter and went straight to the back of the shop where they broke the windowpane and opened it. They then used the bolt cutter to cut the burglar bars and gained entry.

“While inside the shop, they stole 12 laptops, six laptop bags and 19 pairs of shoes. They vanished from the scene.”

On August 1, police detectives received information to the effect that the accused persons were selling suspected stolen property which included cellphones, laptops and shoes at Manica Bridge.

Detectives reacted to the information quickly and proceeded to Manica Bridge where they met Mukwamba at his homestead.

“The detectives searched him and found a cellphone in his pockets. They went to his bedroom and recovered another tablet cellphone. During interrogations, he indicated that he had stolen the items from Hauna together with Chivasa,” said Mr Mufute.
