A 31-YEAR-OLD man who drove his friend’s car without a valid driver’s licence and caused an accident in the city was ordered to pay $300 fine or risk 40 days imprisonment after he was convicted of negligent driving by a Mutare magistrate.

Tinashe Benza of House Number 114, OTS, Sakubva was convicted on his own plea of guilty when he appeared before Mr Innocent Bepura last Thursday.

He admitted to contravening Section 51 (1) and Section 6 (1) (a) of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 13:11, otherwise known as driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid driver’s licence respectively.

Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted.

Allegations were that on March 8 this year, Benza drove a Toyota Corolla at Mudzviti Bus Terminus. He reversed the car and rammed it into a stationary Yutong bus.

The Toyota Corolla had its view mirror and rear fender damaged, while the bus had some scratches on the front bumper.

Mr Karombe told the court that Benza was at fault since he drove the car without a licence.

Asked by Mr Bepura on whether he drove the vehicle without a license because there was an emergency, Benza said a friend had asked him to reverse the car from where it was parked.
