Chinese Olympic swimmer Fu Yuanhui has been praised online for breaking the taboo surrounding menstruation in a post-race interview. Fu, who is famed for her frank sense of humour and hilarious facial expressions, was clearly in pain after the women’s 4x100m medley relay. The swimmer was seen crouching down as her teammates were being interviewed, having just missed out on a medal and placing fourth.

When Fu was asked by a reporter from CCTV if her stomach hurt she first apologised to her teammates for her performance, before revealing she had her period. “My period came last night and I’m really tired right now,” Fu said, according to Shanghaiist. “But this isn’t an excuse, I still did not swim as well as I should have.”

Fu has been praised on Chinese social media site Weibo for her honesty surrounding a subject that is still considered highly taboo in her home country. “Wow she still has to swim when she’s on her period? This is heartbreaking,” one sports fan wrote.

‘It is a normal physiological phenomenon, so why can’t we mention it? Fu Yuanhui is awesome! ,” another supporter wrote. Previously the swimmer gained legions of fans online for her hilarious facial expressions during an interview at Rio Olympics.

The superstar then cemented her newly found fame in a live stream during which she opened up about boys, Mack Horton calling Sun Yang a ‘drug cheat’ – and her entertaining reaction when she found out she won a bronze medal in the middle of her ‘defeat speech’. More than 10 million fans tuned in to watch the 20-year-old Olympian talk as she repeatedly urged fans to stop donating money to her. – Daily Mail.
