MUTASA Rural District Council has selected eight sites for the construction of dumpsites across the district.

The selected areas were once used for sand abstraction and brick moulding.

Mutasa RDC’s main aim is to replenish and make good use of these sites as well as dumping litter in designated areas

The selected sites are Tsambe brick moulding site, Tsambe pit sand extraction site, Manica Bridge river sand extraction site, DAPP pit sand extraction site, Mupenga river sand extraction site, Ngarura River sand extraction site, Hauna Brick moulding site and Hauna pit sand extraction site.

Mutasa RDC engaged New World Advisory Services (NWAS) to formulate Environmental Management Plans on its behalf as required by Environmental Management Agency.

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) are currently being done on the eight chosen sights.

Each dumpsite is expected to be 20-square meters large.

Meanwhile, Mutasa District has four major centres that are fast developing into urban set-ups.

Unlike the eight other centres, Mutasa RDC has engaged SustiGlobal Consulting Company to identify the best area to serve as dumpsites for Tsvingwe/Penhalonga, Watsomba, Hauna and DC Mutasa.

Mutasa RDC chief executive officer, Mr George Bandure, said: “As a local authority, we are moving in a direction that complies with regulations that has to do with safeguarding our environment. We want to do away with the old fashioned way where ravaged land will be left just like that. In this case, we decided to make proper use of the abandoned brick moulding sites and those places where sand and pit sand have been extracted for construction purposes.

“We want to lead by example as a local authority and as the CEO, I want to urge other districts and provinces to follow suit and be cautious on making the environment look beautiful and conducive.
