MANICALAND will host the newly launched rural cricket development programme dubbed Cricket Kumusha or Cricket Ekhaya.

The programme is expected to develop the game in rural areas and provide the platform for more talented players to emerge. The three-day training will be held at Mutare Sports Club from January 19-21.

Manicaland Cricket Board administrator Terry Nyakurimwa confirmed the development and thanked Zimbabwe Cricket for coming up with the idea.

“Following the successful introduction of cricket in high-density areas which over the years has seen the emergence of international stars such as Tatenda Taibu, Hamilton Masakadza and Prosper Utseya, Zimbabwe Cricket has now set its sights on unearthing talent in rural areas.

“ZC in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation has already started rolling out the newly launched rural cricket development programme that is expected to develop the game in rural areas and provide a platform for more talented players to be noticed.

“As the Manicaland Cricket Association Board and management, we are very excited about this development. We do recognise that there is vast talent in our rural set-up. We thank Zimbabwe Cricket and the Ministry of Sports for such a great vision. We are looking forward to making it a huge success,” said Nyakurimwa.

Manicaland’s seven districts will be represented and there will be trainings for trainers.

The programme kicked off last year in Midlands Province where a three-day training of trainers’ workshop was held at Kwekwe Sports Club.

The presentations included introductory presentations on the history of cricket and basic terms. The participants were also taken through batting, bowling, wicket keeping fielding and umpiring basics.

The other provinces which have been visited include Mashonaland West, Mashonaland Central, Bulawayo, Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South and Masvingo.
