THE Zifa Junior Football League Mutare District which brought the city alive for the whole year ended on a high note with most clubs fulfilling their fixtures.

It was a great season for the junior league as they participated in three major tournaments.  The league started on a low note, but gained momentum after mid-season.

Sakubva-based side Tafara City Vellos had a fruitful season as they dominated in the Under-13 and 17 categories.

In the U-13 category, Tafara City Vellos finished on top with 56 points followed by Sicho Masachi’s La Sakubva which were 16 points behind. Barons were rooted at the bottom of the 12-team league log with four points.

In the U-15 category, La Sakubva was the winners with 64 points and just two points ahead of P Stars. City Vellos were on fourth position with 44 points. City Vellos again topped the U-17 league with 56 points, while City Strikers were 10 points behind.  La Sakubva ruled in the U-19 category with 42 points.

In cup games, Sheckon Stars won the Mai Hondo U- 15 tournament after dismissing City Strikers 5-1 in the finals in December. The tournament was sponsored by former Tanganda juniors’ player, Blessing Mutsaka. They won it for the second time after winning it the previous year. They got a trophy, soccer kit, medals and a ball.

La Sakubva, on the other hand, won the Farai Musariyarwa U-17 Cup after dismissing their rivals Sheckon Stars 3- 1 in the finals played at Chisamba rounds.

La Sakubva have churned out a number of recognisable players and was formed 14 years ago. They have been dominating almost all the junior tournaments. They have also won the Farai Musariyarwa tourney in 2014 and 2015.

In the U-18, La Sakubva did it again. They dismissed Sheckon Stars 1-0 in the Willard Katsande tournament which they have won twice since its introduction in 2012.

League chairman, Themba Ndlovu, said it was a great season despite few minor glitches.

He said all teams tried their level best to fulfill fixtures. Ndlovu lamented lack of sponsorship as one of the challenges their league faced. He expressed hope for a great 2017 season with more tournaments for all age groups.
