A TOTAL of 15 dance groups and 40 solo dancers from the country’s 10 provinces will today (Friday) and tomorrow battle it out in the ninth edition of the Jibilika Dance Festival national competitions to be held at Courtauld Theatre in Mutare.
The two-day fiesta which is the country’s biggest urban dance festival will be held in the eastern border city for the first time since its establishment in 2007.

Participants were selected through provincial preliminary auditions process held over a four-month period across the country in search of the crème de la crème of dancers.

The festival was established with the thrust to stimulate dance as a vehicle for cultural development, youth engagement, to build capacity and develop talent, while entertaining.

The highly entertaining festival encourages diverse dance cultures, with the aim of enhancing cultural appreciation, growth, employment creation and youth engagement.

The event incorporates mentorship on various youth-related issues, training and development workshops in various communities, exhibitions and performances.

Jibilika Festival Trust director, Plot Mhako, said an avalanche of activities such as fitness workout workshop and street cypher for youths would take place before the main event.

“Besides the dance competitions, we will host scores of local youths today, discuss and conscientise them about issues that affect them.
“Street cypher is a free community engagement platform that seeks to raise awareness on HIV, provide testing and counselling and entertain. Fitness workout workshops will also be hosted by Paul Modjadji from South Africa,” he said.

This year’s festival is running under the theme: “Empowered” as it seeks to enhance dance into a business, a profession and empower the community with positive social messages in the face of HIV, sexually transmitted diseases among other challenges affecting youths.

Local radio station, Diamond FM will broadcast the event live.
The 16 provincial finalists are Lixon Scorpions (Hwange), Super Geeks and Megatrones (Bulawayo), Prototypes (Masvingo), DT Foxes (Gweru), Flame House (Kwekwe), The Ninjas (Kadoma), Reflections, Juveniles and Clarks Warriors Crew (Bindura), B-Street and Two naFlex (Marondera), Unit Edge (Chitungwiza), XFM, Lethal Fam and House of Animates (Harare).
