THE first edition of the Mudehwe Memorial Trophy will roar into life on Monday in Honde Valley with three teams taking part.

The tournament is bankrolled by Nyaradzai Mudehwe in remembrance of his late twin brother, Nyasha who died last year.

Hauna will be hosting another tournament after the Gazzaman Tournament, but this time with an international flavour.

One of the sons of Honde Valley, Nyaradzai Mudehwe, who is based in Ethiopia, is hosting a tournament in honour of his late twin brother, Nyasha. The tournament will be held at St Columbus High School.

One of the organisers of the tournament, Eddy Chimhini, confirmed the development and said all was in place.

“We got everything in place. All preparations are complete and we are just waiting for the kick off time. This is big event in Hauna and we did our best to make sure everything is up to standard. We are remembering one of our players, Nyasha Mudehwe who passed on last year. This is to honour him and to remember all the good works he did for our team.

We normally play a tournament every year on December 26, but this time it is a different thing all together,” he said.

Teams that will take part in the one-day tournament include Hauna Sweepers (locals), Hauna Sweepers (foreign based) and one team from South Africa.

Hauna Sweepers (locals) will hope to continue with their giant killing acts when they take part in this tournament.

They are still basking in the glory of winning the Gazzaman Soccer Tournament held in the area last weekend.

In a telephone interview from his Ethiopian base, Nyaradzai Mudehwe, said he would be home soon to make sure that the tournament was a success.

“It is an annual tournament and the brainchild of all who have played or have been involved in different forms with Hauna Sweepers since its formation in 1993.

The current local players and those who are now based outside Hauna meet annually and play against each other. It is also a celebration of Hauna Sweepers and the tournament takes pride in the meeting of old friends.

It is also played in the spirit of Merry Christmas where the team receives soccer regalia, a full kit and balls.

There is a trophy and medals to be won. We will also honour departed members of our team and I lost my twin brother recently. So this year I have decided to honour him,” he said.
