MUTARE rugby franchise, Mutare Sports Club, is still in the game to possibly end the season in the top five, the chairman Moss Kapumha has said.
The first round of the top-flight National Rugby League ended last weekend. The Shumbas failed to capitalise on a second-rated Old Hararians team, losing 32-7 on their home ground, after holding OH 10-7 in the first half.
Msc is currently sitting on seventh position with nine-points above bottom bencher Zvishavane bulls (zero-points) and Gweru Sports Club (Six-points).
Kapumha said he is hopeful that Msc will end the season on position five above Old Miltonians (13-points) and Western Panthers (14-points) currently on position six and five respectively.
“The team has been improving with each match and this can be shown by the reduced big margins as in past years, when playing against the big teams, Harare Sports Club, Old Georgians, OH and Busters.
“We just need to work on a few things to improve our game, but definitely there is more to look forward to from the Shumbas in the second round as we aim to finish the league among the top five teams,” said Kapumha.
In a twist of events HSC still hold on as the log leaders with 36 points and are determined to restore their battered pride and retain the NRL cup. OGS is on second position with 31 points while the defending champion OH is on third position with 28 points with Bulawayo’s Busters trailing behind on 26 points.
Meanwhile the NRL will take a two-week break and resume on July 12. The Shumbas will open the second round of the league against OMS in Bulawayo and host Zvishavane Bulls the following weekend.
