MUTARE Sports Club rugby team last Saturday continued its winning streak after thumping visiting Bulldogs 70-5 in their third Intercity City league match.

They have so far won all their three opening matches.
The visitors were no match to the Mutare Shumbas as they managed to place one consolation try in the second half, while the hosts had 12 tries, which will earn them bonus points and propel them up the log from their current fourth place.

Tatenda Maunga, Jones Dedza and Dylan Jera each placed two tries for the home side, while other tries came from Linton Kusena, Simba Chipangura, Hope Gunda, Tinashe Guwa and the Tsunga brothers, Clinton and Takunda.

Maunga kicked through three try conversions, while captain, Gideon Muyambo who had a brilliant match orchestrating eight brilliant tries throughout the match, kicked over two try conversions.

The Mutare Shumbas were last week on fourth place out of 11 teams with 10 points and a game in hand. They were trailing behind Mat Warriors (15), Old Georgians (14) and Harare Sports Club (10) respectively.

In descending order behind them was Old Miltonians (10), Police Defenders (7), Old Hararians (6), Bulldogs (5) with GSC, Highlanders and Old Johanians at the bottom with no points.

New log standings after last weekend’s games were not yet out on Wednesday by the time of going to Press.

Tomorrow (Saturday), the Mutare Shumbas will travel to Harare and face Old Johanians. The match kicks off at 15.30pm.

MSC captain, Muyambo, said unfortunately this week the team had just two days to train following the tragic death of their coach, Mackenzie Munetsi’ son, Jamal.

Jamal (20) who was involved in a car accident at Christmas Pass last Sunday evening died on Monday morning after sustaining serious injuries.

He was also the team’s organising manager who was in charge of logistics during all home fixtures. “We had to pay our last respect to Jamal and called off training sessions from Monday until his burial on Wednesday.

He was part of us and was always there to help the team in organising logistics for home matches,” said Muyambo. He, however, said they remain optimistic to maintain a winning streak tomorrow.
