A CHITUNGWIZA-BASED motorist allegedly attempted to kill a traffic cop by hitting her and driving his vehicle for 600 meters while she was clinging on the bonnet of his vehicle.
Jimu Sigauke Bahari (29) of Number 33, Baribango, Zengeza 1, Chitungwiza was not asked to plead and advised to apply for bail at the High Court when he appeared before Rusape magistrate, Mrs Elizabeth Hanzi.
Bahari who is facing attempted murder charges was remanded him in custody to June 2 for trial. Public prosecutor, Mrs Moreblessing Tapfumaneyi, told the court that Bahari only stopped his vehicle with Constable Theodora Chiparawashe (32) clinging on his bonnet after he was chased by a well-wisher who offered fellow police officers transport.
“On May 18 at around 1pm, at the 162km peg along Harare-Mutare Highway, Constable Chiparawashe was in the company of Sergeant Mwonzora and constables Lavaia and Goshomi when she saw the accused person overtaking on a continuous line with his Toyota Wish vehicle, Registration Number AEO 0353. Chiparawashe signalled Bahari to stop.
“Bahari stopped and was asked to produce his driver’s licence. He produced a photocopy of his driver’s licence and claimed that he had left his original driver’s licence at home. Chiparawashe went to the front of the vehicle to check other road offences on the vehicle and she called Lavia to assist her.
“Bahari then drove his vehicle towards the complainant and hit her. She was thrown on the bonnet of the vehicle and the accused person drove forward and back in a bid to shake off the complainant, but to no avail as she got a firm grip on the wipers of the vehicle,” said Mrs Tapfumaneyi.
It is alleged that Bahari drove the vehicle for about 600 meters while the complainant was still hanging on the bonnet of the vehicle.
“Constable Lavaia and Sergeant Mwonzora followed Bahari’s vehicle using a well-wisher’s vehicle and managed to intercept it. Bahari was ordered to come out of the vehicle and was arrested. The complainant lost her shoes and police cap as well as traffic books during the scuffle. She sustained injuries on her left palm,” said Mrs Tapfumaneyi.
