SASSY on radio, sassy at home, sassy everywhere! That is Ucrying Yemurai Sasamba Yemurai Sasamba for you.

Born at Old Mutare, the first daughter of Rosemary Dzere and Joshua Sasamba, this beautiful Diamond FM gem went to Hillcrest Pre-School and Hillcrest College for her education. No wonder the constructive verve and the sassy air around this beautiful radio presenter. We cannot separate Yemurai (I hope she won’t kill me for preferring Yemu for her name) from the Hillcrest influence: purpose, focus and leadership.

The 21-year-old sassy exudes enormous confidence and energy. She bubbles with character and defies the simplicity of mind normally associated with youthfulness. You talk to her and you will be surprised at the wisdom embedded in that tender age.

What sparked this light and confidence in her? How did it happen?

“My history is full of activity, sport and leadership,” says Speedo.

“During my primary and high school years, I was an amazing athlete. I broke records and captained basketball, athletics and hockey. I was woman and youth president for Manicaland basketball, and coached youth games from 2011 to 2016.”

That is Yemu for you in one word. No wonder she is a bundle of joy, confident and serious at whatever she is doing.

Who said sporting does not build character? If anything, sporting builds character more than anything. It imparts competitiveness, unbreakable spirit, formidable discipline and an instinct for winning.

How did the name Speedo come about?

She smiles and answers: “I was as fast as lightning in basketball. Basketball requires digital speed and agility. It was that frightening speed that earned me the name Speedo. It is not a radio name. It was a nickname given me by friends and admirers for this digital agility.”

Sassy refers to a girl who is up to the minute… trendy and just colourful in every sense. How did this one come about?

“Nothing about that kind of Sassy, it is all about my father’s name or our surname—Sasamba. Sounds like sassy, doesn’t it?”

The most impressive thing Yemu said on radio on the programme ‘Know Them Better’, was her answer to the question to do with the temptation to lose one’s head on radio and believe one is a celebrity.

“We can fly up to the sky and proceed to seek space over the moon, but every decent girl must finally come back home to reality,” she said.

I was pleasantly shocked to find Yemu standing good ground, behaviourally that is, and surprised I was face to face with a young girl who is very mature, focused and extremely good natured.

The Diamond FM presenter is well in measure and control about what makes a young lady decent or rotten.

“Radio is amazing and exciting, no doubt about that. But this must not make you corrupt-minded and lost. This world can get anybody crazy if you are not careful, but as I am emphasising, at the end of the day, life is about you and nobody else. What goes up must eventually come down and what goes round comes around, you will have to come back home…come back to your senses.”

Ucrying may look young and childlike. She is nor childish…far from it. She thinks and speaks wiser than many adults that I know and see drowning in useless airs and graces.

“How did you find yourself at Diamond FM?”

“My Hillcrest sports director, Mr Chris Mhike encouraged me to contact the Diamond FM sports department. I did. I was successful. And that’s how I came here a few months ago. I love sporting and I enjoy sports commentary and analysis with Tich.”

Speedo attended courses at Mutare Poly and Zimbabwe Institute of Management. She lives, breathes and sleeps sporting, but above all loves radio.

She will win more medals on radio than in sporting.

I wish her the best at Diamond FM.

Thank you for being my guest.

Until next week when I feature another Diamond FM star… Enjoy!
