MASHONALAND East teams had a good outing as they won the Heroes Volleyball Tournament played at Nyamhuka Primary School in Nyanga over the Heroes’ holiday.Six men and women teams converged at Nyamhuka Primary School in Nyanga for the inaugural Volleyball Heroes’ Tournament.
The teams include Mashonaland East’s Greyhounds, Macheke Stars, Manicaland Police and Nyanga Mavericks, while Mashonaland Police and Manicaland Police represented the ladies.
The one-day event was organised by Manicaland Volleyball Association and was open to players from other provinces.
Despite being the host, Manicaland teams failed to turn up for the tournament, save for just three teams. The prizes included cash and trophies.
Mashonaland East teams won all their matches to be crowned the winners.
In the men’s category, each team played three games. In their opening game, Mashonaland East’s Greyhounds dismissed Manicaland Police 2-0. Last year’s winners, Nyanga Mavericks were beaten 2-0 by Macheke Stars. Mashonaland East Greyhounds won again against Macheke 2-0.
Manicaland Police narrowly edged Macheke 2-1, while Nyanga suffered a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Greyhounds.
Manicaland Police beat Nyanga 2- 1. In the ladies’ category, Mashonaland dismissed Manicaland Police 2-0.
Manicaland Volleyball chairman, Farai Mboto, thanked all the teams who turned up for the tournament and urged all local teams to value such events.
“Our main aim was to honour our fallen heroes. It was a competitive and interesting tournament.
I would like to thank other provinces who sent their teams to the competition. I urge all the local teams who failed to turn up for this competition to do something.
I know that clubs are finding the going tough financially, but let us try by all means to participate in such tournaments. It will help develop the sport,” said Mboto.
