MANICALAND Volleyball Association is hoping for a fruitful season as their league kicked off last weekend with a total of nine matches being played.

A total of 10 teams registered this year with MANVA.

The league had its open tournament a fortnight ago which marked the beginning of the 2017 volleyball season.

Compared to last year, this year’s turnout was huge with five female and six male teams respectively.

MANVA vice-chairperson, Charles Sakala told The Weekender that the league started well with all teams fulfilling their first round league matches.

He said they were hoping to secure sponsorship to host more tournaments.

“Our 2017 volleyball season is so promising. We started on a high note with 10 teams participating. It is so encouraging. We had six male and four female teams. For a long time we have been battling as a province to come up with a meaningful league, but this year it is a bit different.

“It seems teams are more serious and geared up for the league. The province has so many teams, but still struggling financially. However, we hope more clubs will join the league. The door is still open,” said Sakala.

Manicaland has been lagging behind in terms of a meaningful volleyball league compared to other provinces.

A total of nine matches were played last Saturday at Mutare Poly grounds.

In the male’s category, ZRP Mutare registered their first win of the season with a 2-0 triumph over Africa University, while the hosts, Mutare Poly fired warning shots when they got the better of Mutare Teachers’ College by a 2-0 margin.

Boys Club dismissed ZRP Mutare 2-1.

Rusape’s representatives, Hardhitters proved a strong side after sending MTC packing. They dismissed the ‘Teachers’ 2-0.

Luck was not on Africa University’s side as they were thrashed again 2-0 by Mutare Boys’ Club.

Mutare Poly went on to dismiss Hardhitters 2-0. Mutare Teachers’ College lost to Africa University 3-2 in the women’s segment, while Mutare Poly was dismissed 2-0 by ZRP.

Mutare Poly went on to lose 1-3 to MTC.

Stiff competition was noted in the ladies matches as the teams battled for victory. Even the heavy rains could not send away volleyball lovers as they waited patiently for the rains to stop so as to resume the games.

In the males’ category, Mutare Poly is currently the log leaders with six points, while Mutare Boys Club is on second position with only a single point behind the log leaders.
