MANVA hosts volleyball tourney

A TOTAL of seven teams including a Mozambican select took part in the just-ended Manicaland Volleyball Association (MANVA)  tournament held at Mutare Polytechnic last weekend. The tournament, a strategic move by MANVA to give the local clubs international exposure saw Mozambican sides dominating in both categories.

In the ladies’ category, Mozambique beat Africa University 2-0. Africa University went on to dismiss the hosts, Mutare Polytechnic 2-0. Mozambique won 2-0 against Mutare Polytechnic and finished on top followed by Africa University and the hosts respectively.

In the men’s category, Mozambique beat Africa University 2-0, before dismissing Mutare Boys’ High with the same margin. African University edged Mutare Boys’ High School 2-0. Mozambique beat Mutare Polytechnic 2-1 to finish tops. Mutare Polytechnic finished in second position, while Africa University and Mutare Boys’ High School finished on third and fourth position respectively.

Speaking after the tournament, Manicaland Volleyball chairperson Farai Mboto said the tournament gave the local teams an international flavour.

“We wanted to give our clubs an international feel. Mozambique is a volleyball powerhouse with clubs like Autoridadi being a force to reckon with in the Zone VI and Africa at large. They even gave us highlights on how volleyball is developing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mutare Polytechnic are the log leaders on the seven-team log table with a total of 17 points from six games played. In the ladies’ category, ZRP Mutare is leading with seven points from three games played.
