MANICALAND Rugby Board will tomorrow (Saturday) host an invitational Sevens tournament and inaugural provincial rugby awards to honour coaches, sponsors, referees and players from clubs and schools, who did well during the 2017 season.

Manicaland Rugby Awards Committee chairman Stanley Mwatunga said preparations for the prestigious event were at an advanced stage.

“We are geared up for the inaugural awards. We will make it an annual event. It is good to honour of players from both clubs and schools, female players, referees, coaches and our sponsors who have stood with us all the way. This will greatly encourage them to do more in the forthcoming season.

“We have achieved a lot as Manicaland this season although the Inter-City League did not finish as expected due to financial constraints. Our boys were doing very well. They managed to play a total of 10 games. They only lost two games. I feel we are going in the right direction as a province,” he said. Mwatunga applauded girls’ rugby teams that took part at the Dairibord Schools Rugby Festival.

“We can also talk about the girls’ rugby team that took part in the Dairibord Schools Rugby Festival where three girls from Mutasa district represented us so well. We have decided to honour their hard work as a way of encouraging them to do even better next season. We also have players like Captain Gideon Muyambo who were called for national duty which is a great achievement for MSC,” he said.

There will be 15 categories for the awards, which include the Player of the year award for both schools and clubs, Special Honorary Award, Outstanding Manicaland Referee, Legendary Rugby Award, Special Acknowledgement Award, Most Valued player of the year, Lifetime Achievement Coaching amongst others. Zimpapers Group Marketing Director Mr Tapiwa Mandimutsira will be the guest of honour.
