ODZI High School ruled the roost in this years’ provincial scouts challenge competition held at Chinziwa Scout Camp last Friday as the province now prepares for the national contest to be held at Matopos in Bulawayo.

An interesting trend where rural schools tend to do well in scouting as compared to urban school saw Manzununu Secondary School coming second while third position went to Marange High School.

Mutare Girls High came fourth.

These top schools, which showcased their scouting skills before a team of judges, will go through vigorous training in preparation for the national competition on November 25.

The best patrols from each district were selected to take part in the competition that was dubbed the ‘diamond challenge’.

The competition attracted scouts from various districts like Chimanimani, Makoni and Mutare urban.

The national skills competition, which will be held in Bulawayo this year, is an annual event on the scout calendar where scouts from all the provinces in Zimbabwe gather to showcase their skills in various scouting challenges before a panel of judges.

The winning patrol (team of eight scouts) wins the title of being the best scout in Zimbabwe. This victory will allow the scouts to take part in other regional and international competitions of scouting.

The Manicaland Scouts Association chairperson Mr Enerst Mungwari, who is also the Provincial Scout Commissioner, graced the occasion and took time to go through the campsites designed by the scouts.

In his speech during the official opening of the competition, Mr Mungwari emphasised the need for scout to work hard at everything they do.

“You must work very hard so that you continue tom excel in everything you do. We want scouts to be able to bring food on the table. Whatever activity you do, do it well, so that you can be successful in life. Zimbabwe requires people who are creative and are not afraid to try new things. Take those skills to other spheres of your life and prosper. We will help you achieve your goals if we see that you are talented,” said Mr Mungwari.

Meanwhile, there will be a Manicaland Scouts leaders meeting to be held at the Manicaland Headquarters.

“We write to invite you to Manicaland Scouts leaders meeting to be held at the Manicaland Headquarters at 1 Jubilee Street in Mutare. The meeting is one of the monthly leaders meeting that provides a platform for all leaders in the province to meet and plan for the activities in the province. All leaders must attend this meeting so that they remain in touch with the leadership for the province. The meeting is set for October 8 at 12pm to 2pm. It will be held in the Scout Committee Room,” reads part of the notice.

Mr Mungwari also added his voice on the importance of the meeting.

“Manicaland scouts continue with their strategic plan to meet world standards for scouting in the province. Following the successful completion of the assessments for all groups in the province the scout leaders are due to meet on October 8 at the provincial headquarters to make sure all the strategic plans are on course. On the meeting leaders will draw a road map for scouting in the province. I am calling upon the leaders to attend the meeting without fail.

“I call upon all leaders to come and help build Manicaland scouts. We want the future of scouting in this provinces and I want all leaders to come so we can put our heads together,” he said.
