Man fined $50 for stealing padlocks

FOR stealing four padlocks worth $27,96 from Pick and Pay Supermarket, a Chikanga man was fined $50.Brian Seke (22) was convicted of theft on his own plea of guilty as defined in Section 113(1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23 by Mutare magistrate, Mr Poterai Gwezhira last week.He was fined $50 and will be jailed for 30 days in case of default.

In his defence when asked by Mr Gwezhira on why he had committed the offence, Seke said: “I wanted to pay, but I forgot when I was at the counter. I am sorry Your Worship, it was not my wish to steal.’’

Prosecuting, Mr Fletcher Karombe said: “On August 17 at around 3pm, the accused person entered the shop and picked a pie and a Cascade drink. The accused then proceeded to the electrical appliance shelve and picked four padlocks. He hid them inside his jacket.

“The accused then went to the till and paid $0.75 for the pie and cascade. He went away. He was arrested at the exit point and the padlocks worth $27,96 were recovered.”
