Man denies paternity to avoid maintenance

A MUTARE man denied paternity of his two children in a bid to escape paying maintenance last Friday.

Charles Chihota was fighting against the $300 maintenance suit filed against him by Thandiwe Nyanhanda for the three children they sired together.

Miss Nyasha Kuture heard the matter. Nyanhanda told the court that Chihota realises $540 per month.

“According to his pay slip, he earns about $540 per month, but he is not even bringing even a cent home. I can manage with $300 for the three children because I am not employed. He should help me to take care of his children because as we are here the other one is not going to school because the father is not paying the fees,” said Nyanhanda.

Chihota denied fathering the second and the last child.

“I have one child with her, the other two I don’t even know their names and she is here claiming that I should take care of them Your Worship. That cannot happen at all unless we go for the DNA test. I can only afford to pay $50 because I have other children to take care of,” said Chihota.

In her ruling, Miss Kuture ordered Chihota to pay $80 as monthly maintenance for the two children with effect from January 30.

“Go for DNA tests and prove that the children are not yours and come back to court before May 31. For now you are held responsible for those children’s needs,” she said.
