A-63-year-old Marange man was last week convicted by a Mutare court of raping a relative’s child whom he gave some zapnacks to conceal the heinous offence.
Fungai Makotamo, of Chikuku village, under Chief Marange, was convicted by Mutare regional magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe for contravening Section 65(1) (a) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23.

He is expected back in the dock for judgement today (Friday).
Prosecutor Mr Flecther Karombe proved beyond doubt that sometime in July this year, Makotamo unlawfully had sexual intercourse with the eight-year-old complanant.
A minor child cannot consent to sex at law.

The convict asked the child to bring him fire, and upon arrival, he told her to sweep his dining room and bedroom.
“When the minor was about to finish sweeping the bedroom, Makotamo entered the room and closed the door. He assaulted the complainant before removing her underwear and raped her,” said Mr Karombe.

After the act, Makotamo instructed the minor not to tell anyone about the incident.
He also ordered her to wash her hands and later sent a neighbour to give her two packets of zapnacks.
The matter came to light the following day when she fell sick.
The child then revealed to her father that Makotamo had sexually abused her.
The father made a report at Marange Police Station, leading to his arrest.

A medical examination was conducted on the minor at Mutare Provincial Hospital and a medical report was produced in court as evidence to show that the minor was indeed deflowered.
