MACADAMIA farmers in Chipinge have praised the Government and the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs (Manicaland) Cde Monica Mutsvangwa for intervening in curbing theft of the lucrative nuts.

Speaking during Minister Mutsvangwa’s tour of Chipinge recently, macadamia farmers said cases of theft of the nuts have decreased significantly since the Minister’s intervention.

Macadamia Farmers Association vice-chairperson Mr Jetro Makuve said macadamia nuts theft had become a challenge in Chipinge.

“Macadamia farmers here in Chipinge commend the efforts being done by Minister Mutsvangwa in combating theft of out produces. The situation had been out of control as armed thieves invaded our farms. The Minister engaged the Joint Operation Committee (JOC) members who swiftly intervened to protect our produce. Although we recorded few thefts this season we hope to work hand in glove with the security sector in the upcoming seasons to completely end macadamia nuts robbery. This season we have managed to realise returns because of joint efforts by the security sector,” he said

The association treasurer Mr Farai Chivhuzhe said macadamia nuts theft should be treated as special case at court to deter would-be offenders.

“We are happy with the Minister’s gesture and we are looking forward to work with everyone in curbing theft of nuts so that we will contribute to the economy of the country. We also need the law to penalise would-be offenders,” said Mr Chivhunze.

Speaking during the same occasion, Minister Mutsvangwa urged Chipinge farmers to increase production of macadamia nuts as it has the potential of reviving agriculture.

“Chipinge farmers are privileged to have favourable weather conditions for growing macadamia nuts. Don’t hesitate to grow macadamia nuts.  Government will continue giving you maximum support. We are in the process of establishing a statutory instrument so that macadamia theft will be treated as a highly punishable offence,” she added.
