THE Marange man who murdered his brother in cold blood and tried to conceal the offence by slicing the body parts of the deceased and hiding them in a well has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Tonderai Kichini of Muchiwanga Village, Chief Marange was convicted of murder as defined in Section 47(1)(a) or (b) of the criminal law (codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 by High Court Judge, Justice Charles Hungwe last Friday.

Ms Jane-Rose Matsikidze prosecuted. It was alleged that on July 12, 2015, Kichini and his brother Tichaona Kichini had a misunderstanding over keys to their mother’s kitchen which were in the deceased’s possession.

“As a result of the dispute, Kichini struck his brother with an iron bar on the head three times leading to the deceased’s instant death.

“To conceal the murder, Kichini dismembered the body of his brother and buried the remains in a disused well and a hollow of a tree near their homestead.

“The offence was discovered later when dogs began to consume human flesh and take it home,” said Ms Matsikidze.

A report was made to the police and Kichini led detectives to the recovery of the various body parts. The remains were taken for a post mortem and it was concluded that death was due to severe head injury.

Testifying in court, Kichini’s neighbour Fungai Tahona said on July 13, 2015, his dogs came back home with blood smeared mouths and bulging bellies and that he assumed that they had ate a dead animal.

The following day, the dog came with a piece of flesh in its mouth and after failing to establish the source, he buried it in a small hole in the ground.

He however, trailed his dogs the following day and they led him to a blood stained spot near the Kichini homestead where there was a partially covered pit surrounded by a swarm of flies.

The mother of the two brothers, Jane Kichini told the court she had gone to a funeral and had left both of them at home when the offence occurred.

She said when she returned, no one was home and when Tonderai came back, he told her that his brother, Tichaona, had gone to Mushunje business centre for a beer drink.

When he did not return home the next day, Jane alleged that she presumed he was still drinking beer as he had done that before.
