GOVERNMENT has come to the rescue of Mutare Provincial Hospital that was facing debilitating challenges that threaten to render it dysfunctional, following an injection of $350 000 for its rehabilitation.

The provincial referral hospital had not undergone any major facelift since its establishment decades ago, resulting in the structures falling into poor condition.

A tour of the institution by the Health Service Board this week exposed the rot at the institution.

The acting medical superintendent Dr Emmanuel Sedze said plans were already in motion to channel the funds disbursed under the Public Sector Investment Projects, to spruce up the health facility.

“We received $350 000, which we will channel towards sprucing up the institution. The department of public works has already done the scope of works and we will be ready to start as soon as the modalities are in place,” he said.

Dr Sedze said the institution requires a complete overhaul, but the availed funds were insufficient.

“We will not be able to do everything that needs to be done at once and work will be staggered. We can work on one wing and make sure the job is properly done from the floors to painting,” he added.

Dr Sedze said the Mutare Rotary Club has pledged to sponsor the renovation of the out patients department (OPD).

Funds will be sourced from the club’s international partners.

Dr Sedze also said the refurbishment alone were not a panacea to the provision of first class health services as the hospital was no longer able to cater for referrals from the whole province.

“Refurbishing the hospital will not finish all our problems. We actually need a bigger and new hospital.

“We also need a purpose built school of nursing,” he said.

The hospital, said Dr Sedze had obsolete and malfunctioning machinery and equipment which needed both rehabilitation and replacement.
