A DANGAMVURA kombi driver is in trouble with the law after he was arrested for contravening a litany of road rules, which included running away from traffic police officers.

Edward Masiya of N309 Area C in Dangamvura high-density suburb denied reckless driving charges when he appeared before Mutare senior magistrate, Mr Langton Mukwengi. He was remanded to October 28 for trial.

Masiya is facing charges of contravening section 53(1) of the Road and Traffic Act Chapter 13:11. The State led by Mr Fletcher Karombe said the suspect was a reckless driver who, at times, drove on the wrong side of the road.

Apart from driving on the prohibited right side of the road the suspect is alleged to have driven past a red robot.

“He risked the lives of the passengers when he drove through a road block and ran away from a police truck that was trailing him.

“During the chase he drove against oncoming traffic and only returned to his lane when collision was imminent.

“To avoid being overtaken by the police vehicle, the suspect turned left into a dirt road and drove for about a kilometre and stopped.

“When police detectives disembarked from their vehicle and approached the commuter omnibus, the suspect rolled up the windows and drove towards the two officers,” said Mr Karombe.

Detectives Kaukonde and Kutadza then fled into the bush when they saw the kombi driving at high speed towards them.

“The suspect also allegedly reversed the kombi towards the police vehicle and, sensing danger, the police driver tried to reverse his car but it was too late. The suspect hit the front bumper of the police vehicle resulting in his rear wind screen shattering in the process leaving fragments on the police truck,” said Mr Karombe.
