THIS new series of profiles features Diamond FM presenters and The Manica Post staff, journalists in particular. The purpose of these features is to let the radio and newspaper clients know their presenters and writers better.

Many people, readers and listeners alike, think radio presenters and journalists are people without faces and characters. True to some extent! Listeners or readers always hardly know anything more about these people beyond their names! The programme KNOW THEM BETTER comes to you on Diamond FM Radio every Sunday between 12:30 and 1pm. The host on the talk show is non-other than yours truly MM. Enjoy!

Featured on KNOW THEM BETTER already is beautiful Tracy- Chapman-voiced Mercy Ngwebvu-Wasu chaiye, she calls herself on radio.

Mercy is a bundle of life and has a sweet sense of humour. She is obviously an inspiration to hundreds and perhaps thousands of Diamond FM listeners.

“Born and bred in Mutare I’m a typical product of the Mutare community,” Mercy told listeners on radio. She was the icebreaker on the programme and gave her followers and likers quite a treat in the studio with MM recently.

“I was born Mercy Tafadzwa Ngwebvu on 21 September, 27 years ago, and went to Dangamvura Primary School and St Dominic’s High School (2004 to 2009) for my secondary school education. I enrolled with Harare Poly (2011 to 2012) and obtained a diploma in Journalism and Media Studies,” said Wasu-Chaiye.

The Diamond FM star, main news reader and charming DJ revealed to listeners that she was passionate about environmental and health issues.

Asked whether she thought what a radio personality did in the public after radio really mattered, Mercy said it was important to keep on checking one’s own public conduct. “As a radio personality you have a lot of people who look up to you as a role model. It is important that you don’t put off your fans or likers by behaving badly in public and putting on a questionable decorum. I always make sure I present an acceptable and often expected personality even on public transport when I go home after work.”

Mercy was brave enough on radio to confess she is in a serious relationship, I hope not to the disappointment of many male listeners.  She admitted she loved children, which children MM carefully construed to mean those of or from her own loins.

“In my early youth I was inspired by radio presenters like James Maridadi, Comfort Mbofana whom she admitted she really loved, Jestina Mukoko, Bridget Gavanga and Nicola Ndoro (Nicky) of Star FM,” Mercy said on radio.

Asked if she had hopes, wishes and aspirations beyond Diamond FM Radio, the beautiful Mercy did not mince her words.  “I aspire to be a TV –show host,” she said.

I have no doubt Mercy who enjoys a lot of Oprah Winfrey looks could in a Zim-way make the world talk-show celebrity, Oprah herself, run for her money. Best wishes Mercy! Go girl, go! Even the sky must not be the limit. Zimbabwe badly needs correct role models and worthwhile celebrities!

Next week on KNOW THEM BETTER, I will feature Hardlife Zuweni aka Hardy-Zuu of the zuwenometer and zuwenification fame. Keep fingers crossed! Watch the space!
