A POTENTIALLY exciting fifth edition of the Willard Katsande annual junior football tournament gets underway in Mutare tomorrow (Friday), with the former Warriors’ captain Best 11 set to clash with Mutare City Rovers as curtain-raisers for the final match.
Katsande has been sponsoring the tournament which features mainly Under-18 teams from Mutare, but the competition will shift from the norm this year as representative teams from all the 10 provinces will also partake in the tournament.
An exhibition match featuring the former Warriors’ captain selected Best 11 players will clash with Premiership- bound Mutare City Rovers as curtain- raisers for the final match. In an interview from his Naturena base this week, Katsande confirmed that all was set for the event.
“We are going ahead with the tournament this coming weekend. We will have representative teams from other regions and that teams the tournament is improving with each passing year.
“We are happy that we have managed to stand the heat and be able to run the tournament for half a decade now.
‘‘ We have no doubt that we will continue doing so and products of this initiative will soon illuminate local football competitions. That is our aim to develop talent so that we can have more Willard Katsandes,” said the soft-spoken former Warriors’ captain.
Other former and current football players that will take part in the exhibition match include Zephaniah Ngodzo, Ticha Mabvura, Liberty Chakoroma, Pasca Manhanga, Onsimor Bhasera, Liberty Ndadzungira, Gerald Takwara, Washington Pakamisa, Kingstone Nkata, Blessing Moyo and Protasho Kabwe.
