JAPANESE coach, Yutaro Tazawa (pictured right), last week conducted high school development trainings for junior baseball players at Sakubva High School ahead of the Major League Baseball trials to be held in Harare on October 20.

A number of schools from Mutare Urban took part. The schools which sent their players include Mutare Boys’ High, Dangamvura High, St Joseph’s, First Class Academy and the host, Sakubva High 1.

There will be Under-16 and U-18 trials at Allan Wilson High School in Harare where all provinces will be represented. Successful candidates will represent the country in South Africa later this year in the Major League Baseball competition.

Speaking to The Weekender last Saturday morning, programme facilitator for Manicaland Province, Sheila Chikovi, said as a province they had benefited a lot from the trainings.

She said they hoped to have more of the trainings and more children joining in.

Chikovi also urged school heads to support and assist children who will travel to Harare.

She said: “We have benefited a lot from the trainings by Tazawa. We hope to go there and excel. We have a lot of talent in our province and we have achieved a lot in this year’s NASH games as a province. I now call for support from all school heads as we travel to Harare. These trainings also involved rural schools, but they could not come citing financial constraints. We are going to Harare with a number of students who have been doing well in our province and we hope to put Manicaland on the map.”

Tazawa who is the Zimbabwe junior development baseball coach, said baseball was improving at junior and club levels.

“I think Zimbabwe is doing well in both junior and senior levels. I have noticed a lot of talent in Manicaland. Ever since I came to Zimbabwe the sport is growing. Manicaland coaches are working very hard and this has made my job more interesting. I have visited this province three or four times and there is a lot of development in as far as baseball is concerned. I will be back here again from October 22 to 23 for club practices,” said Tazawa.

Part of the team that will represent Manicaland include Godfrey Nyaguse, Nixon Chikono, Ray Chananda (all from Sakubva High School), St Joseph’s duo of David Mugurameno and Tino Dhliwayo, Mutare Boys’ High’s Wyne Maimbo, Terrence Muzarabani, Tanaka Matowanyika and Desire Mabikire of First Class Academy.

Meanwhile, baseball league enters its third week with two matches to be played.  Red Sox will take on Falcons this Saturday at Sakubva High 1. White Sox will play against Falcon at the same venue. In the matches played last week, White Sox thrashed Falcons 12-7, before dismissing Red Sox 4-9.
