DESPITE the conspicuous absence of most top local artistes at a musical gala to celebrate the country’s independence at Mutare Show grounds on Independence eve, the event lived to its billing as thousands of fun lovers were sent into delirium with some top-drawer performances from some of the musicians. Blessing Shumba, Agatha Murudzwa, Brian Samaita, Juicer Mpostori, Project Fame and Ntswai Ntswai among others were some of the musical groups that many fans would have loved to be part of the celebrations, according to a Weekender Entertainment survey.

One of the organisers, Blessing Mukozhiwa said most artistes could not perform because of limited funding. “Some of the artistes we engaged wanted to be paid to perform but we couldn’t because of limited funding. Most artistes were not comfortable to perform for free. We operated on a stringent budget. We are however happy that the gala was successful despite the absence of other known artistes,” he said.

Hungwe Stars’ Simba Muchita, who performed first, stole the limelight with some sublime performances and left people clamouring for more. He belted out tunes such as Sasha, and Topembera.

Two Keys, Terrence Dzatsata, Mai Wakatama, Mark Sounds and Cde Lucas are some of the musicians who did not disappoint.

Mozambican outfit, Pedra Angula put the icing on the cake with some cool, danceable passada hits. While Passada music (also known as Kizomba) is largely popular in Angola and Mozambique, local fans were enthralled by the unique and refreshing presentation. Another Mozambican artiste, Jepson Mseenzi also performed at the gala.

Officially opening the event, Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Mandi Chimene, who was accompanied by the guest of honour, Governor for Manica Province, Mr Alberto Ricardo Mondlane said it was important to celebrate the hard-fought independence in style. She paid tribute to Mozambique for being an all weather friend.

Revellers were treated to some alluring fireworks at midnight as they celebrated the country’s 37th birthday.
