AN elderly Chimanimani woman believed to be in her late 60s dragged her son-in-law before the courts on Tuesday for failing to look after his 12-year-old disabled son.

Edith Masango dragged Farai Padare before Mrs Jessy Kufa claiming $400 as monthly maintenance.

The two hail from Cashel Valley, but Padare works as a tail-logger operator at Border Timbers in Chimanimani.

“My grandson is 12-years-old now and is yet to start school because of his condition. He is deaf and had not walked from birth until last year. The problem is that he needs to go to a school where he can get special care, but his father doesn’t care. I therefore seek the court’s intervention,” said Masango.

She said Padare promised to bring a bucket of maize, sugar and cooking oil ever since he parted ways with the child’s mother.

“He has not done anything for years now. I do not know his salary, but $400 is enough for this child’s needs,” she said.

Padare shot down the claim and offered to pay $20.

“I have two wives and three other children to take care of, so $20 is enough for this child, Your Worship. I am a tail-logger operator and my monthly salary is $138 and where does she expect me to get the $400,” he said.

He could not produce his payslip in court.

Mrs Kufa ordered Padare to pay $40 as from March 30 and apply for downwards variation after bringing his payslip before the court.
