CAPS United legends Stewart ‘Shuto’ Murisa and Alois Bunjira believe the Green Machine Class of 2016 has what it takes to rekindle the sweet memories of the 1996 season when the Green Machine capped a fine season with a league championship trophy and a Soccer Star of the Year award for Murisa.

The duo, who were a vital cog in that ’96 CAPS United team that banged in a whooping 75 goals in a season, made a huge impact that four CAPS United players of that season were among the top five top goal scorers with Bunjira hitting the nets 24 times while Murisa, a feared attacking midfielder of his time, found the target 21 times.

Morgan ‘Nkatazile’ Nkatazo and Joe ‘Kode’ Mugabe were the other two CAPS United players that were on the list of top five season’s top goal scorers, hitting the nets 17 and 19 times, respectively.

And today, CAPS United are on the verge of reclaiming the lost glory thus Murisa and Bunjira believe the current crop of players at CAPS United have shown the character to last the distance and clinch the coveted gong in this riveting race for the 2016 Castle Lager Premiership title.

CAPS United staged a dramatic comeback to restore parity and walk away with a point to show after a gruelling Harare derby that had seen them trail by three goals with about eight minutes of regulation time remaining.

The result, coupled with results from other matches involving championship chasing FC Platinum and Highlanders, saw CAPS United retaining the top slot, thanks to a slender one point lead at the summit of the table.

As the Castel Lager Premiership league takes a break this weekend to pave way for the Chibuku Super Cup finals, CAPS United are at 53 points while second placed Highlanders have amassed 53 points with FC Platinum weighing in third position after collecting 52 points, all from 27 rounds of league matches.

“I think they boys at CAPS United have done well to show that they can do it. I have no doubt that they will last the distance and clinch the coveted trophy.

“Yes, they have had their challenges during the season but I personally think they managed to keep their heads above waters and as things stand they have done much of the work.

“I do not see any of the teams in the race, Highlanders of FC Platinum overtaking them. It is our time once again and this evokes memories of the 1996 season. I am happy for the boys at CAPS right now and wish them well as they finish off the season,” said Murisa in an interview on the sidelines of the Nyanga Supa Cup tournament held in Nyanga last weekend.

His sidekick, Bunjira also shared the same sentiment saying the team only needs to keep their feet on the pedal as they into the last lap of this race for the title.

“I think they have done well and they have shown from the onset that they can do it. The coach has really done a good job and he deserves to celebrate at the end of this season.

“He (Lloyd Chitembwe) has managed to keep the intact even when the road proved to be tough. I really hope that complacency will not creep in and that they will go all the way to the last match of the season winning their remaining league matches.

“The good thing is that CAPS United have the destiny of the league in their own hands now and they only need to make sure that they win their remaining matches. That’s all,” said Bunjira.
