‘I stole because my seniors are also stealing’

A STUDENT with a local college who is currently on a work-related learning attachment with a local company was last week arraigned before the courts for stealing from his employer.Tawanda Makwanise (21) was convicted on his own guilty plea when he appeared before Mutare senior magistrate Mr Langton Mukwengi facing charges of theft as defined in Section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.Makwanise, who was attached to Duly’s Mutare, stole engine oil from his employer.
Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted.
It was the State’s case that on May 31 and at Duly’s Garage in Mutare, Makwanise stole five litres of oil and hid it in his satchel.
“He tried to leave the garage, but was apprehended and searched by Arnold Mudavanhu, a security guard at the gate.
“Mudavanhu recovered the five litres of oil and a police report was made leading to Makwanise’s arrest,” said Mr Karombe.
The oil is valued at $19.
Responding to the allegations, Makwanise said he stole because his co-workers were also stealing.
“My seniors act in the same way and I was just unlucky. I thought I could get away with it as they usually do,” he said.
Makwanise was ordered to pay $20 fine.
