I have HIV, but cannot disclose to my wife

Dear Tete
I was a very promiscuous and abusive husband for many years. I have since learnt that I am now HIV positive. The chances that I have infected my wife are very high. How can I tell her that my bad actions have resulted in us being HIV positive? I do not want to lose her at all.

Tete Responds:
Blaming yourself at this particular juncture is not necessary. What is done is done. Move out of the guilt into the acceptance of things as they are. You owe your wife the truth which is her right to know your status. It is possible that if she gets tested, she may be negative. Do you not want to give her a chance? If you truly love her, you will disclose your position no matter what her decision afterwards. Ask your counsellor to help you engage your wife to disclose your status. Remember, it is not a death sentence.
