THE Hillside at 105 golf tournament tees off at Hillside Golf Club tomorrow (Saturday) amid expectation of a huge turnout of current and aspiring amateur golfers.
The tournament starts at 10am.
According to the organisers of the event, the tournament is meant to celebrate the rich history of the Mutare’s only golf course in the periphery of the central business district.
Caleb Kunze, spokesperson of the tournament organisers, said the main aim of the tournament is to promote interest in gold among locals in Mutare and beyond.
Kunze decried the decreasing lack of interest in the game of golf in Mutare which has left Hillside golf course being taken care of by a few members left.
“I think it is now clear that there is a sheer decrease in the interest in the game of golf. Therefore this initiative is meant to promote interest in prospective players as well as those that have always been in the game.
“The other purpose of holding this tournament is to fundraise for the maintenance of the golf course. We shall have some holes that will be going for cheap prices where companies or business entities can buy to advertise their wares,” said Kunze. He added that this is going to an annual event whereby every committee that comes in by way of annual election has a mandate to hold the tournament.
“This is one way we also want to thank the previous committees that have run Hillside Golf Club for the past 104 years. Therefore we have made a deliberate decision to have all committees that are elected into office to run the affairs of the club to host this tournament.
“It is also imperative to note that this is also an opportunity for local business persons to exchange notes and network in a relaxed golfing environment. We sincerely hope that this and other initiatives will help increase membership at Hillside,” he added.
Kunze said there are prizes in store for winners.
Meanwhile, Hillside’s Onias Muungani reports that local caddie Lloyd Gaya won the Hillside Caddies Golf tournament that was played last Tuesday at Hillside Golf Club.
Gaya won the tournament ahead of Hardlife Chinhoyi in a tournament that attracted about 24 local caddies with almost all of them getting prizes for partaking in the tournament.
The tournament was organised by the Hillside Golf Club management committee as a way of thanking their caddies for their good job as well as assisting them to develop their golfing skills.
Speaking at the prize giving ceremony, club captain Andrew Halloway said the tournament is going to be an annual event.
