A GRADE One pupil at Mutanda Primary School in Sakubva’s high-density suburb ran amok on Tuesday morning and beat up his teacher with bare hands in a case that left authorities at the school dumbfounded.
Acting Manicaland Education Director Mr Andrew Chigumira confirmed the case and said the Mutare District education directorate was investigating the case.

“I have just received that report in bits and pieces, but I will get the full version later. What I have heard is that a Grade One pupil at the school behaved weirdly on Tuesday and started beating his teacher with bare hands.

“It was exceptionally physical and he was shouting on top of his voice in an unknown language which people failed to comprehend.
“After a while the teacher managed to ease him and took him to the headmaster’s office where he finally got back to his senses. We don’t know what was happening but it was weird. One of our inspectors is investigating the case and when everything is done we will let you know,” he said.

When The Manica Post visited the school pupils were learning well but the incident was still on the lips of many.
Interviewed teachers who requested anonymity since they are not authorised to talk to the Press said the boy behaved weirdly.

“That pupil needs help because at times he acts as if he is possessed by something. He instantly gets physical and he is difficult to confront. The authorities must talk to his parents and ensure that he gets treated if he is suffering from some sort of illness.”

Vendors who sell confectionery outside the school premises said the incident was shocking and it requires spiritual healing.
“When a child behaves wildly like that and exhibits physical power that outmatches a grown-up person it shows that there is something unnatural making him to act like that. Prayers are needed to calm him down.

“What if this boy turned his anger on another pupil of his same age? It will be a different story altogether.”
