Hello there folks, hope you had a great week. I had a horrible week, but there was a great evening in between all that. Ask me where was I this last weekend? I was attending a fashion show, an exclusive fashion show,  held right here in Mutare, Sanhanga Courtyard.

It was hosted by the young men behind the Power020 Universe (Leonard Muyambo, Tawanda Kusembedzera, Sean Nyatsvimbo, James Kupa, Mufaro Mujuru and Comfort Nyanungo). Yes, what a show it was! The “Velos Fashion Show” was unique, in that it only showcased Mutare designers’ clothing, using Malia Modelling Agency (Mutare) Models.

The stylist did a great job with the models; the deco simple but effective; DJs on point; the guests stylish and the event organised. There were no intoxicated models, no after party brawls, no vulgar and improper behaviour, what a nice evening.

Do I sound like I am gloating/boasting? Of course, why not? I have spoken about such shows for years and years, pleading with Mutare designers to come up with their designs and to showcase them to us monthly around the city, so that we can support our own.

Finally, a group of people have heard me and they have “awakened the sleeping fashion giant”. Finally, I can do my job as a fashionista, which apart from discussing international trends and giving you fashion, health and beauty advice; it is mainly to showcase what is new and happening in the fashion world locally.

I had no idea there were so many designers in the City of Mutare, operating behind tall buildings and in suburbs.

It saddens me that many of these designers are reduced to seamstresses/dressmakers.

Deep in their souls they are big creative designers, just waiting to be showcased on the international market with the label, “Made in Zimbabwe”.

I loved the fact that the designers showed off their designs that could dress everyone, from all walks of life, from the trendy to the traditional. It was a fashion show that crossed the divides of race, colour, creed, age, gender, religion and political arenas. I may be the only one right now celebrating this feat, but not for long . . . I am patriotic about my city and this nation, if we do not celebrate its achievements, who will?

All I have to say is well done guys, Makorokoto on having the guts to wake the Manyika Fashion Giant up. It’s not easy because the giant may mistake you for the enemy,  but you took the first step and eventually your efforts will bare fruit.

To the designers this is the beginning, soldier on, be diligent and meticulous, show us what you got, Mutare is waiting.

Hele hele hele haaaa magona wena! This fashionista salutes you all.

That’s it from me this week folks. I will be over the next few weeks be showcasing the designers and their designs that were showcased at this event, so as to inspire Mutareans to please support these shows and designers to be bold and enter your creations.

Enjoy your week!
