THE annual Alois Bunjira Tournament will kick off today (Friday) at St Columbus’ High School in Honde Valley, with 20 soccer teams battling it out.The tournament dubbed GazzaMan Honde Valley Cup will run up to Sunday.It was launched by former CAPS United board member for Marketing, Alois Bunjira who is making efforts to develop his roots through sports.
This tournament follows the successful Gazzaman Under-17 Tournament held in September. It was meant for the high school students in Honde Valley.
Among the teams expected to participate is Albun Soccer Academy, which is bankrolled by Bunjira.
“This year we have three teams coming from outside the Honde community to grace the event which include Glendale, Albun Soccer Academy from Harare and Zero Stars from Nyanga. We also have six local netball teams competing for the top prize, two basketball teams and 10 snooker teams,” said Samushonga.
In an interview, one of the organisers, Victoria Samushonga, said all was in place for the tournament.
“It is systems all go for the tournament. All teams have confirmed their participation. The three-day event will start this morning (Friday morning). Besides sporting activities, entertainment has been lined up for Saturday night.
She added that a lot of prizes would be won by teams as well as individuals. These include cash, trophies and sporting kits.
“Tomorrow (Saturday) evening there will be entertainment throughout the night with performances from MZAMO, a South African-based music crew and Raymond Chakanyuka, a musician also based in South Africa, but born in Honde Valley,” added Samushonga.
