Gaza High School garnered a bronze medal at the recently held National High School Quiz on HIV and AIDS held at Prince Edward High School in Harare after a closely fought affair with other giants in the country.

Since 2012, the school has consistently been in the top three at provincial level in the Quiz competition. However, this year (2016), Gaza High School grabbed the top gong and went to the national finals as the Manicaland representative and the students did not disappoint.

“We came first in the first round and qualified for the semi finals where Chegato, Mosi oa Tunya and Highfield 1 posed formidable opposition in the school’s quest to clinch the holy grail. After a brave fight, we had 20 points while Highfield 1 High School and Mosi oa Tunya obtained 24 and 22 points respectively,’’ Liberty Sithole, one of the two patrons told The Manica Post.

The students who carried the flag of the school high are Patricia Sango, Praise Makwakwa, Lucky Mashava and Khumbulani Sithole.

“We got an overhead projector, a laptop, PA System, four e-book readers and a floating trophy as the prize for coming out third,’’ Mrs Nyarai Mavhiza, the other patron of the HIV/AIDS Quiz Club, weighed in.

For the quiz participants to scale such lofty heights there is need for research. That was said by Liberty Sithole, who is also a teacher of English at the school.

“We thank the Head, Mr Stanley Thondlana and his administration for facilitating the success of the club through logistical and moral support. Nevertheless, it is important to talk about research as the sine qua non for success. At our school, we have Wifi facilities and that goes a long way in helping the students to get information which would help them during their quiz time,’’ he added.

Mr Stanley Thondlana expressed optimism that the school would continue to do well in various club activities.

“In view of the successes that this club has brought to the school, I call upon many schools to participate in this competition which may result in behaviour modification among our students,’’ he said.

“So far, the Gaza High School Quiz Club has won the institution: 3 TV sets and DVD players, 4 laptops, 2 printers, 2 overhead projectors, a large white board, large petrol generator, several book vouchers, 4 smart phones and several trophies,’’ he added.

The National Aids Council (NAC) runs the HIV/AIDS Quiz competition; NAC is the one tasked with monitoring the AIDS menace and giving people means and ways of surviving or getting medication.
