A Rusape man is lucky to be alive after he escaped a fire that gutted down a Rusape house which he was sleeping in during the early hours of Tuesday morning last week.

David Johannes Sakala, a tenant at 1562 Silverbow, was awakened by noise from neighbours trying to put out the fire.

Rusape district police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Muzondiwa Clean said property worth $90 200 was destroyed as the fire brigade was called late.

“David Johannes Sakala who is a tenant at 1562 Silverbow was asleep in his room when he heard his neighbours shouting fire fire. He woke up and saw some smoke in his room and passage. He ran outside and saw people carrying buckets of water and sand trying to put out the fire which was near the entrance door,’’ said Ass Insp Clean.

At that time the fire was now being seen through the roof. Sakala used a stone to break the window panes of his room and managed to escape with some few belongings.

The fire spread to all the 9 rooms destroying properties of the other five tenants. Fire brigade was called but the fire had already destroyed the house. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

“Police investigations are still under way. We want to remind people to be always careful with household electrical gadgets. People must make sure that gadgets are switched off when not in use, said Ass Insp Clean.
