Hello Mutare, we did a makeover on a young lady — Tanaka, we hope you will be inspired and encouraged by her story like we were.

Hi, my name is Tanaka Nyausaru , I am 23 years old. I am an independent young lady born and lives in Mutare. I love everyone and I enjoy making those around me happy. I don’t have many friends, and am content with that.

I’m not lonely, I just like my privacy and independence. Right now I am unmarried, happy, successful and blessed by God in my life. My success didn’t just come on a silver platter. It took me years of hard work, hardships, good times and energy. In 2003 my mom passed on. I was eight years old. I only saw my father once, so I never knew him. I began staying with my mother’s sister and her children which one of them became fond of vakoma. All my childhood I was sickly there was never a time that I could say I’m perfectly fine. In 2010 I was in secondary school. It was a blood donation day for everyone at our school. I also joined feeling very happy and eager to experience the session. They took my blood, but took time to give me my results. They told me that I couldn’t donate blood because I was HIV positive. I was very surprised. It turns out I was born that way, I got it from my parents, but had never been told.

Tanaka after her makeover

At the time it did not touch me, even a bit, I even laughed and left the room in my usual happy mood. After some time at home my sister got ill she was diagnosed with cancer . I looked after her for some time until she left me without a word, leaving two children behind. It took me time to accept her death. This pained me more than the passing of my real mother. I struggled so severely in that house with her mother. Things changed from better to worse. At times there was no food for me, no soap to bath, no bucket to pour water on, no blankets, nothing. Mother had completely changed to such an extent that she didn’t want to share anything with me because I was HIV positive. To survive I started working part-time jobs, working in fields and so forth. Once in a while I would get something tangible that I would bring to contribute at home, but as soon as they finish it, the bad treatment would start.

So I ended up living as a street kid. Many people knew me because of that. I started living with a friend for some time. She loved me like I was her own sister. In all that I did manage to do and pass my O-Levels. One day at church I met a lady who told me that Government was offering scholarships, I applied and passed. I went to school while working and then I moved out. I started renting my own place in the low density suburb until now.

Between these years I was trying my luck to find my Mr Right. I dated and dated and dated so many guys up to 15. 14 of them couldn’t accept the fact that I was positive and would leave me as soon as I would tell them. I prayed to God to help me find someone who could love me for who I am and he answered. I met a very nice, kind and loving guy .OMG he is so amazing, he makes me feel special. I’m living a happy life. I now have a job, I also go to school, and I have a place to call my home, a guy who loves me and I have people and friends who love me. I also have an adorable uncle and aunt to care for me. I’m so grateful !!!!

I’m no longer struggling; in fact I’m rich yah very rich and healthy. I can now eat what I want at my own time, travel, buy clothes, further my studies and all that. God!!! I can even help others now. I give thanks to the Almighty and to all those who believed in me and supported me until now including my mom who raised me, friends and my current boyfriend of course.
