SOCCER fans in Mutare roundly applauded the Warriors following their qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations Gabon 2017 tournament.
Warriors captain, Willard Katsande, delivered a rare leadership stroke by guiding the national team to Afcon qualification to be held in Gabon in 2017.
Katsande becomes the second captain after Peter Ndlovu to lead the team to an Afcon qualification.
This comes after a decade-long dry spell. Warriors’ supporters interviewed on the streets of Mutare this week applauded the team for their effort.
Caleb Mafara could not hide his joy.
“Seeing the Warriors qualify after 10 years absence is a dream come true. Maybe their failure to qualify for the previous tournament was a result of the Asiagate scandal and other scandals that rocked the football fraternity.
“We want to congratulate the current players and coach for qualifying for Afcon 2017,” he said.
Mr A Nyagato said: “Well done to the Warriors. We will rally behind them all the way to Gabon.
“ZIFA should now do all the best to maintain the players’ high morale by honouring promised bonus and allowances. The Warriors should embark on more competitive friendly matches with teams like Egypt and Cameroon so that they measure their performance of play.
“The Warriors must improve in the midfield and capitalise on ball possession and create more scoring chances.”
Lazarus Mandisodza of Dangamvura said: “The victory was well deserved as the Warriors fielded a much stronger squad than their counterparts.
“Katsande as the team captain is a good motivator and shows maturity as he guided the team to victory. The coach is the right man for the Job.
“ZIFA president and its stakeholders also deserve praise for turning around fortunes of Zimbabwe football,” he said
