A HOBHOUSE woman who masqueraded as a police officer and duped a cross-border trader of her goods worth $130 was arraigned before the courts last week. Ropafadzo Babra Mucharuona (30) was remanded out of custody on her own cognisant to November 9.

She pleaded not guilty to impersonating a police officer when she appeared before senior Mutare magistrate, Mr Langton Mukwengi.

Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted. Allegations were that sometime in May, Mucharuona approached Chenai Ketiwa and introduced herself as a member of the Zimbabwe Republic Police attached to the Criminal Investigation Department at Mutare Central Police Station.

“She then took a packet of weave on credit and promised to pay at the end of May.

“During the same month, Mucharuona approached Ketiwe again and took a coat, two dresses, a pair of shoes, one handbag, two pairs of stockings and a skinny jean on credit after advising her that she would pay when she gets her salary,” said Mr Karombe.

Ketiwa is alleged to have made follow-ups at CID offices at Mutare Central in October and realised that she had been duped.

This led to Mucharuona’s arrest. Ketiwa lost goods worth $130 and nothing was recovered.
Meanwhile, a local crèche owner also appeared in court for duping a desperate student who wanted to be enrolled as a trainee teacher at a local college.

William Muneka (43) was remanded out of custody to November 14 when he appeared before Mr Mukwengi on Monday. Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted.

Allegations were that Muneka lied to Tendai Mwedzi that he could help her secure a place to study at Marymount Teachers’ College.

After Mwedzi had presented her issue to Muneka, he told her that her number of certificates had exceeded the number of O-Level sittings required.

He is alleged to have instructed her to pay him $50 so that he could process the papers and to assist her to be enrolled during the July 2016 intake.

After failing to secure a place during the July enrolment, Mwedzi realised that she had been duped and made a police report.
