Arthur Marara Motivation for Success

This is a continuation from last week’s article. Please make an effort to get last week’s paper so that you can read what I wrote, and from where I am continuing.

David activated the Law of Excellence

There is no one who can resist excellence. Excellence will attract opportunities for you, and people will look for you. In 1 Samuel 16:14 Saul is tormented by a distressing spirit from the LORD. The servants prescribed a solution, a harpist who could play music so that Saul is relieved. “So Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”” 1 Samuel 16:17 (NKJV). I deliberately added emphasis) Saul did not just want a harp player; he wanted someone who can play well, in other words someone who is a master at their art.

The word “well” means there are many others who can play the instrument but Saul was not settling for anyone, but the best at the art. Saul gave a specific instruction for that person to be brought to him. This is what excellence does; it will distinguish you from the rest.

An ordinary boy who had never met a king was to actually secure a spot in the royal palace to play an instrument for the king. David was a serious harp player such that Psalms is often attributed to him, when he is not the only contributor in the book. There at least five writers of Psalms.

David built a brand

There is this lie that price is everything in business. This is not true! The last and least worry that serious customers have is price. People buy brands, even if it means paying more than what a normal person would pay. When Saul’s servants were looking for a harp player, there was a name which came close to their minds. 1 Samuel 16:18 says, “One of the servants said to Saul, “One of Jesse’s sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp player. Not only that-he is a brave warrior, a man of war, and has good judgment. He is also a fine-looking young man, and the LORD is with him.”(NLT).

This summarises their understanding of David’s brand, but these attributes are even more important to look at them closely. The servant of Saul recognises that Jesse has several sons (eight to be specific), but there was one whom he could single out. What makes you stand out from the rest? This is the true test of branding? What makes you different from your contemporaries? There are six principles that appear from David that activates success in his life. These characteristics were not developed in a day but daily.

David was;

1.) a talented harp player. — Your talents are important in life if you are going to attain and live a successful life. David had and knew his talent. David actually developed his talent to an extent that it was actually known throughout Israel even by influential people.

What is your talent? Have you taken time to develop your talent? You see, your talent is actually supposed to feed you and your future, yet many people are so lazy to discover and develop their talents. Cash in on your talent. If you haven’t discovered your talent, make it your goal this year to discover it, and make the most of it.

“Everyone has talent. What is rare is the courage to follow the talent to the dark place where it leads.” (Erica Jong). I agree with these observations. There is talent hidden in each and every one of us. We need the will to pursue it. Your success in life is in your talent, and most importantly in using it to the best of your ability. I agree with what Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once said, “The person born with a talent they are meant to use will find their greatest happiness in using it.”

There is no greatness without self-discovery. Who are you? Where are you from? What is your unique purpose on earth? How do you want to be remembered when you die? What problem do you want to solve for mankind. You see every great person you see or read about solved or is solving a human problem. It however starts by discovering yourself. What are you passionate about?

It is very possible to live and die an average life. The secret is simple; do not care about discovering yourself and your gifts. I am glad to be writing this article during the year when FIFA World Cup took place. I had the opportunity of watching Christiano Ronaldo (with his team) playing against Spain, and him literally rescuing Portugal from potential defeat.

I am not a football fan, but one thing I can tell you is that the man discovered himself. When he is playing soccer he is actually not working he is doing a hobby. There are several more examples of people who are gifted. Ronaldo would have been living a miserable life if he was not playing soccer. Discover your talents and make the most of them.

Reflect on the following quotes on talent;

“With ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all things are attainable.” Thomas Foxwell Burton

“Use what talent you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best.” Henry Van Dyke

“Talent is a universal gift, but it takes a lot of courage to use it. Don’t be afraid to be the best.” Paulo Coelho
