Dokora said while there have been reports of challenges of resource materials for the new curriculum, there is need to be more aggressive in information.

The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Dr Lazarus Dokora has revealed that his Ministry is set to launch a Newspaper Speaking to Diamond FM, on the sidelines of the Teaching Professions Council Provincial Outreach meeting in Mutare yesterday, Dr, EduNews, part of whose content will also act as resource materials for the new curriculum.

and resource dissemination for the new curriculum.“Ordinarily, you could wake up in your own home with several challenges, you will not stop surviving; those challenges (materials for the new curriculum) are to be expected, especially if you are in a transforming mode as we have embarked on now. But those are things that are surmountable as we go” said Dr Dokora.

“It’s exciting for publishers, it’s exciting for our materials production people, the Curriculum Development and Technical Services, we are soon going to be forming our own EduNews, I informed colleagues in Cabinet last week that we are going to reach out more aggressively than previously, EduNews will carry some of the materials that Teachers and School heads will require for the new curriculum.”

Dr Dokora also said his Ministry had secured funding from central Government as well as from partners to purchase materials adding that he is however, going to ensure that teachers are more actively involved in the materials purchased.

Asked on concerns raised by associations representing people with speech and hearing impediments that although sign language is officially recognised as an official language under the Country’s Constitution the new curriculum does not adequately reflect this, Dr Dokora said the few teachers trained in Sign Language are properly equipped to teach the language.

Pressed on whether enough teachers are trained in Sign Language Dr Dokora said “As you know, my Ministry is not a training ministry, I use the teachers I am given, so, that question ought to be addressed to my colleague in Higher and Tertiary Education.”

The meeting in Mutare, which was also attended by the Secretary for Education, Dr Sylvia Utete-Masango, the Provincial Education Director, and Teacher Associations from across the Province, is the first stop in a tour of the Country’s 10 provinces.
