Eastern Heights College (EHC) now stands shoulder to shoulder with those that have been in it for decades. This independent college, which bravely started with one student, one Marlon Nidza, in 2015 has braved the heat and enjoyed a meteoric rise that must surprise even its founders.

Celebrating its second Speech Night and Prize-Giving Day last week Friday, EHC gave parents, teachers, invited guests and its students a treat to remember as the school exhibited what it means to raise its educational flag sky high.

Though everybody knows the beauty of buildings and assets used are not a guarantee of high academic performance, the learning environment does matter to make sure your children learn in a serene, tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. With state-of-the-art everything, this is what EHC offers.

The college has fully complied with the revised curriculum as evidenced by the exhibitions and award categories. Prize winners came not only from the academic learning areas but from a diverse array of disciplines which included sporting, deportment and contribution to the life of the college and others.

Entertainment offered by the students which included indigenous pantomimes and dance showed that EHC is aware that all work without play is not good even for the busiest of minds.

“We are proud we have offered the Portuguese language as you have seen from the skit done by our students here tonight. It is our intention to offer French in the near future,” the event’s master of ceremonies, Mr Cleopas Nyaku, revealed.

In his report to parents, Mr Tom James, the college headmaster, eloquently pronounced the mission of the college, namely to provide each student with a sound, value based and diverse education in a safe, supportive environment that promotes self-discipline, motivation and excellence in learning.

“We stand proud of the service we have rendered to our community of Mutare,” said the headmaster acknowledging the dream the director of EHC, Mr Samuel Magada had in 2013.

“We have opened our doors to the first ECD A and B intakes. Enrolment of Grade One classes is already in progress for January 2018 as we establish a one-stop learning centre where parents can pick and drop their children,” Mr Tom also announced.

Volunteerism
EHC does not focus on academic and physical development of its children alone. It is serious about developing a child with a philanthropic attitude and Godly conscience. In March 2017 the college led by the outgoing Junior Commissioner of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services, Honourable Blossom Bususu, donated sanitary- ware, sugar and salt to female inmates at Mutare Remand Prison.

The Interact Club gave a donation of clothes and toiletries to orphans and vulnerable children under the care of Simukai Child Protection Programme on 14 July 2017.

“Such donations which may seem insignificant compared to the needs known, strongly nurture a spirit of volunteerism which helps to develop a compassionate, considerate and emotionally balanced child,” said Mr Tom. Citing the college’s challenges the headmaster pointed at the economic challenges which, he said, had resulted in late payment of fees by parents stalling EHC’s development initiatives.

“Remember, the school runs on the wheels of your fees,” he warned parents.

He, however, was quick to announce that the college had opened a payment plan window which they could take advantage of. The guest of honour and speaker, Africa University’s Dr Richard Makoni, learnedly spoke about the science of planning, the commerce of hard work and the art of winning.

The learned doctor emphasised that success began with good planning,  “Where  a plan does not exist there is no goal, and where we have no goals there cannot be successes, for what would one be successful at?” he said.

About the commerce of hard work the good doctor said: “Choose a purposeful career by concentrating very hard on the question, ‘Will anyone benefit from my work?’”

Finally, he asked students and the EHC teaching and administration staff to prepare for the art of winning: “Prepare yourself for victory, and once you are victorious, make sure you get used to that feeling, because that proud sense of achievement is going to stick with you forever …” ended the learned doctor – short and sweet!

He reminded the college to be more visible because, he said, not many people knew about this wonderful school.  The Manica Post hereby ends this invisibility and invites other schools and colleges to trust us and see us to give you perfect visibility through perfect profiling of your stories of achievement.

The EHC Speech Night and Prize-Giving day was attended by principals and heads of several independent colleges, EHC board members Mrs Mufandaedza and Mr Mutungura, business community representatives and EHC director Mr Magada.

The Manica Post wants to congratulate you for your sterling work and share of assisting Government and Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to implement the revised curriculum.

We wish you, Eastern Heights College, more power, speed and lustre in all your endeavours.

LET NOTHING STOP YOU FROM INCREASING YOUR HEIGHT!
