TWO Dangamvura men were last week hauled before the courts on allegations of contravening the Precious Stone Trade Act after they were found in possession of six pieces of diamonds.

The duo – Fungai Tirihumbwe (44) and Tichaona Mutowa (27) – were not asked to plead when they appeared before Mr Innocent Bepura.

Mr Justice Fusire of the Legal Aid Directorate represented the two, while Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted.

Allegations were that detectives Mpofu and Magune from Minerals and Border Control Unit received information that Tirihumbwe and Mutowa were in possession of diamonds which they intended to sell on the black market in the city.

Reacting to the information, the detectives went to Dangamvura Rank where they identified the suspects and approached them. The cops identified themselves and went on to search the suspects.

A piece of diamond was recovered from Tirihumwe’s side pocket of his pair of trousers and five more pieces of the precious stones were recovered from Mutowa’s pocket of his pair of shorts. The State told the court that the suspects failed to produce a licence that legalised them to be in possession of the precious stones according to Section 3(1) as read with Section 3 (2) of the Precious Stones Act, Chapter 21:06.

The matters goes for trial on May 26.
