THE family of a Marange teenager who sustained serious injuries in last month’s Zimunya accident that claimed the lives of three people is appealing for financial assistance from the public to get her operated on at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

The accident which happened on October 8 at the 19km peg along the Mutare-Masvingo Highway was caused by a bogus law enforcement agent who snatched the steering wheel from a commuter omnibus driver at high speed before it overturned several times and landed in a ditch.

Chipo Zimunya (18) who was one of the passengers in the kombi was heading to Munyarari when the accident happened. She is admitted at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare where she has developed bed sores while awaiting to be operated on.

Relatives have been advised to raise US$500. US$200 for pelvic reconstruction plate and four screws for the reconstruction plate with each costing US$105 among other things.

Chipo’s elder sister, Getrude Zimunya, in an interview this week revealed that they were failing to raise the US$500 which is required.

The owner of the kombi who has been identified as Believe Kurasha, has not been forthcoming and is suggesting that Chipo be taken to South Africa where he says it is cheaper to treat her. However, Chipo is bed ridden and unable to sit in a vehicle. She can only be airlifted.

Efforts to contact Kurasha proved fruitless as his phone went unanswered.

“We are deeply worried because we have nowhere to start from,” said Getrude.

“The owner of the kombi has been playing ball and he has been promising to assist us since the accident happened. The doctors told us that we require about US$500 to enable Chipo to undergo treatment. I am unemployed and we are struggling to raise such an amount. We have so far raised $100 bond notes, which the hospital rejected. We are very worried,” she said.

She appealed to members of the public with financial assistance to come aboard.

“Anyone willing to assist Chipo should contact me on 0773977757,” she added.
