Dear Tete Barbara
In December of 2014, I went through a very difficult patch in my life which demanded more money than I earn.

My daughter fell ill and then I lost both my parents in a very short space of time. My salary is nothing to write home about and unfortunately my wife is unemployed.

When things were tough I took a loan from a close family friend which has turned into a fungal infection that is eating me away.

To pay that debt, I had to borrow from another person who charged a ridiculous interest rate and then I accumulated two other loans, one  from a finance house and another from a bank. I am owing close to $4 000.

I pay rent , school fees and need to feed my family. Sometimes I feel like ending my life but I realised that I would only be leading my family into trouble.

It is indeed an unfortunate and uncomfortable situation you are currently facing, but it is not the end of the world. Everyday, people all over the world get entangled in complicated situations that may seem almost impossible to get out of and yet life goes on. Debt is a very real problem in our day to day lives with many individuals, families and even organisations falling into the hole. You can get out of this but it requires a lot of discipline and a few sacrifices. It is important that you and your wife sit down together and discuss your current situation. You must agree on a budget plan and stick to it if it is to work. Clearly, you cannot stop paying school fees but if you have alternative accommodation that is either cheaper or free you may want to take it up. Every cent saved counts and every cent generated gives comfort. You may also consider speaking to your wife about starting an income generating project. If you combine your efforts, you will be free in no time. And please do not take out anymore loans rather work out a payment plan with whoever you are owing.

Good Luck!
