PASSERSBY see it as merely nothing more than a crafts shop, while others associate it with a centre for the handicapped because of its name, Jairos Jiri.

However, to those who appreciate art, Jairos Jiri Craft Centre is the home that manifests the creativity that lies in the hands of artists who seek to showcase the beauty of the African society.

Makiwa Jiri from Jairos Jiri African Craft Shop, who showcases his art in the shop, said all it took was passion and motivation to create what one sees in their mindset.

“Art is about creating something physically that one will have already created in their mind and then the inventiveness lies in the ability to use one’s hand to produce the desired image. Being creative makes one an artist,” said Jiri.

“It just needs one to be imaginative in order to see the unnoticed splendour that lies within nature for whatever is crafted is a reflection of what one sees around them in their daily lives,” he added.

He pointed out that creativity within the artist is only unleashed when the artist begins to hear music that dwells in nature from just dirty plastics laying around or dead wood strewn all over.

“Many young people are idle at home, but they have artistic talent that is not being explored,” he said.

The artefacts around the craft shop mirror the African environment in an artistic way, with many artists getting their ideas from the ordinary places they travel.

“It is not only a matter of those with hands to create, but those with enthusiasm for art as seen with even the handicapped producing art they see from their environment.

“I edge young adults not to just sit around and wait for opportunities to come their way, but should learn to utilise the little available resources they have. Imagine a beautiful art and create it for others to also see the beauty,” Jiri said.
