American Author Rose Kennedy is famously quoted as having said “Life is not a matter of milestones, but moments”, well, true…but every once in a while there is a time when the moment is the milestone….That moment is upon us.

On Saturday, May 13, 2017, Diamond FM celebrates its first anniversary. An anniversary is a time to reflect, to look back and evaluate both achievements and shortcomings, but, above all it is a time to celebrate, and, looking back at the past year on Diamond FM, there is much to celebrate. From the first tentative broadcast, with Prudence Gwitirwa taking to the airwaves and announcing the arrival of Zimpapers’ newest baby, to commanding the largest listenership in the Eastern Highlands, Diamond FM’s growth has been phenomenal, and it was not by accident, but part of the rolling out of a grand vision.

The Manica Post and Diamond FM’s Finance and Administration Officer, Mr Advance Khumalo said “ The inclusion of Diamond FM in  the Zimpapers family, sits very well with the group’s vision to be the most integrated media house in the country, and the theme  “Be seen, be heard”, the print media represents the “be seen part” and Diamond FM makes us be heard…and having Diamond FM and The Manica Post under one roof brings to life that model, already the station is contributing to the group’s top line.”

Asked on how it felt looking back on the past year the Station Manager, Mr Leander Kandiero said: “Obviously our first anniversary is a milestone achievement and looking back at the year, I would like to applaud the people of Mutare and Manicaland and all our other listeners on various platforms for the tremendous support they have given our station which is reflected in the results of surveys done on media products.

“We also extend a hearty thank you to the artistes in Mutare and advertisers who have believed in us, there is no radio without advertisers. And the talented presenters who make the Diamond FM family, we are now telling our own story, in our own dialects. When one remembers that all the Diamond FM presenters were raw talent from Manicaland, it is heartening to note the tremendous progress that they have made over the past year.”

And how true, in the time that it has been on air, the station has touched lives in and around Manicaland, more than just being a source of information and entertainment, the impact of Diamond FM on the community is palpable. It has become a part of everyday life, to the extent of changing people’s daily lexicon through the introduction of new words and diction. Words and expressions like “Kutsvobida” “Kugononda”,  “Kuyaeya” to erstwhile non-existent expressions like “ njainjai” are commonplace in Manicaland.

So in a fortnight from now, the champagne glasses are out, and Mutare is invited to join in the fun of celebrating Gindemukinde raWasu. The official celebrations will be held at the Manicaland Motoring club with Trevor Dongo being the main act. He will be joined by Star FM’s Templeman, and local artists including the chart topping Caff, of the popular “Perfect to me” track, Hip Hop artist Flexxo and dance ensemble “Reflections among other artistes.

The whole Diamond FM family will be there, listeners, presenters, artistes and advertisers. On May 13, all roads lead to Manicaland Motoring Club, don’t be left behind and give our Baba Taps reason to ask… “Waiyepo ere?”
