BONDA-based Chiedza Community Welfare Trust has introduced renewable sanitary towels after conducting a survey in Mutasa District in 2012 which showed that sanitary towels were one of girl child’s biggest challenges.

The co-founders of the Trust: Mrs Gladys Mukaratikwa, Mr Langton Mandimutswa and Mrs Betty Mupambo developed the project as a solution to women who were finding it difficult to purchase pads on a monthly basis due to economic hardships.

“The survey showed us that women are being disadvantaged a lot for most are unable to buy pads every month especially in the rural areas and many have resorted to the use of rags, newspapers, banana leaves during their menstrual days which is very unhygienic,” said Mrs Mukaratikwa

“As a Trust, we have introduced these environmentally friendly renewable pads which can be used for a year, thus cost effective and cheap to those who cannot afford other kind of pads for all one needs is too wash and dry them in the sun for reuse,” she said.

The research showed that most girls would abscond from coming to school for about two to three days due to lack of secure dependable sanitary towels and this would in turn affect their education negatively.

“Most families do not budget money for sanitary wear especially in such economic situations such that girls become hesitant to ask money for pads and resort to unhealthy methods, ” Mrs Mukaratikwa

“The pads come in different shapes and sizes to accommodate different women in the society and as a Trust we hope to reduce girl child’s problems,” she added.
